Obituary for Rosie Smith (Lackey)

Rosie Smith (Lackey)
On the morning of May 10, 2017 at 7:15 am, after 98 years on this earth, our precious mama, Rosie Wallace Smith, left her earthly body to spend Mother’s Day in Heaven. She is now celebrating with our little brother Sparky who passed away in August of 1954, our daddy Jack Wallace and our step dad, George Smith. I’m sure her Mom and Dad and all her siblings were there to greet her too.
Mama was born on January 15, 1919 in Hanna, Oklahoma. Her parents were Thomas Green Lackey (TG) and Sarah Caldonia (Callie) Mcgee Lackey. She and her twin brother, Roscoe, were the last to be born into the Lackey family. Mother was the last of her immediate family as all siblings had preceded her in death.
Rosie and her family came from Oklahoma to Morton in 1928. Grandpa Lackey bought a grocery store and they settled there for several years. Even though her father moved their family frequently, Morton, Texas was always home to our Mama and she dearly loved that town.
Rosie was married to our dad, Jack Wallace, in October of 1938 in Ada, Oklahoma. After their marriage they lived in Oklahoma until 1952 when an opportunity to purchase a cleaning shop in Morton opened up. Mama couldn’t wait to get back to Morton! Once again Morton was home! Mama and Daddy were married 39 years at the time of his death on November 19, 1977. After five years of being a widow in September of 1982 she married George Smith, who we grew to love dearly. George and Mama were married almost 20 years when he passed away in June of 2001. After the death of George her health began to fail and she moved to Lubbock to Assisted living facilities at South Haven, Raider Ranch, and then back to South Haven after a broken hip. We will forever be indebted to Libby, Lauren, and the girls at South Haven for the love and care they gave our Mama! Thank you for loving her!
Mama was an active member of the community of Morton when she was a younger woman. She belonged to Eastern Star, she golfed at the Country Club, bowled in a league, and was involved in all of the school activities for Sara and Sandy. The best supporter of Morton High school you could ever ask for even though she worked full time right beside our Dad in the cleaners.
She will be remembered for: her unconditional love of her kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren, her work ethic, her sometimes unfiltered opinions, the loyalty to her family, her unselfish hours at the sewing machine making clothes for her daughter and granddaughters, the beautiful flowers in her garden (she could grow a stick), family get-togethers with the best fried chicken and chocolate pies in the world! And especially the sacrifices she made for her three children.
Those left to relive memories and think of her often are her daughter and her husband, Sara and Davy Mitchell, her son and daughter in law, Ronnie (big Sandy) and Sandra (little Sandy) Wallace, her granddaughters Wendy Mitchell Moats and husband Paul and Jenny Mitchell Altman, grandsons Ron Wallace and wife Jo Carol, and John Wallace and wife Shaunta. She leaves behind six great grandchildren: Dusty Moats and wife Sasha, Dillon Moats, Maddison and Drew Wallace, Ellie Altman, and Gabbi Wallace. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews she loved very much. Several special nieces and nephews took the time in her older years to come visit, take her out to eat, and write beautiful letters to her. She was very grateful for this and so were we. Thank you to Kirby, Mary Ann, Barbara Jean, Jo Ann and John Wesley.
Mama’s Going Away party will be Monday, May 15, 2017 in the First Baptist Church of Morton, Texas at 2:00 pm. Our family will greet her guests in the Fellowship Hall of the church from 1:00 until time for the service. We would love to have all our friends and family join us for this special goodbye celebration. Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Morton.
