Obituary

Betty Jane Akin died peacefully at her home on Friday, January 17, 2020. She was born January 27, 1936 in Gainesville, Texas to Rubert and Mildred Thompson.

Betty moved with her family from Gainesville to Morton her senior year of high school and graduated from Morton High School in 1954. That very year, she was at the skating rink where she caught the eye of a handsome young man, Elmer Akin, who had not only served in WWII, but had just returned from the Korean War. They married on July 25, 1954 in Bailey County at White Camp Church. Elmer and his brother, Roy built the house that remained their famiy home for over sixty years. In the early years of their marriage, Betty was a homemaker. She later was a seamstress, worked at Taylor Furniture, and then at White’s Auto. In 1972, Betty received an officer’s certificate from South Plains College and became the first female duputy sheriff in Cochran County and remained a deputy until 1980, when she became the Cochran County Tax Assesssor. Betty and Elmer were charter members of the Texas Last Frontier Museum, also helping with Buffalo Soldiers every year. She was a faithful member of First Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years. Betty is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elmer; her parents; and her only brother, Benny Thompson.

Betty is survived by her son, Eddie Akin of Morton, Texas; her daughter, Sandra Elmore of Morton, Texas; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

The family suggests memorials be sent to First Missionary Baptist Church, 102 East Taylor Avenue, Morton, Texas, 79346 or the charity of your choice.
