Obituary for Gladys Williams (Holt)

Gladys (Holt) Williams, age 101, of Muleshoe, Texas passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021 in Muleshoe. She was born August 26, 1919 in Stigler, Oklahoma to Henry and Melissa (Pevehouse) Holt. Gladys moved to Bailey County with her family in 1929. She married Glen Williams in Clovis, New Mexico on January 23, 1939.

Gladys and Glen lived in the Stegall community, south of Muleshoe, where they farmed and ranched. In 1954, after Glen was elected to serve as Bailey County Judge, they moved to Muleshoe. Gladys was the rock behind her husband and his demanding schedule in public service. She didn’t like a lot of attention and preferred to be “behind the scenes”. Her family was her life, and she was happiest when they were around. Gladys kept the household going, cared for her children, and enjoyed working on the farm and with the cattle. She was a warm hostess and graciously opened her home to family and friends. More than once, during the time her husband served as county judge, she cared for abandoned or neglected children in the county that needed a temporary place to stay. Gladys had a beautiful singing voice, and loved to sing hymns. Her family remembers her humming gospel music as she worked around the house and singing in church. She will also be remembered by her family for her fried chicken, coconut pie and sweet iced tea.

Park View Nursing Home had been her home for several years. There, she made many friends and loved and appreciated the staff that cared for her. Gladys is preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her daughter-in-law, Annette Williams; two sisters, Elsie Pollard of Lubbock, Texas and Lennie Knowlton of Muleshoe Texas; and four brothers, John Holt and Marvin Holt, both of Portales, New Mexico, Bill Holt of Levelland, Texas and Elmer Holt of Muleshoe, Texas.

Gladys is survived by her two daughters, Betty Ott and her husband, Raybern of Muleshoe, Texas and Gwen Splawn and her husband, Benny of Twin Falls, Idaho; her son, Randy Williams of McGregor, Texas; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; seventeen great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of family and friends.

The family suggests memorials in her honor be sent to Muleshoe Meals on Wheels, 300 South 1st Street, Room 110, Muleshoe, Texas, 79347.
