Obituary for James "Straw" Smith
James "Straw" Smith died Tuesday, April 21, 2020 in Springlake. He was born March 23, 1934 in Memphis, Texas to Henry and Elvada (Austin) Smith. He married Avis Nail in Lovington, New Mexico on June 4, 1955.
James served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1955 as a PFC in the Artillery Division. He was an avid fan of westerns and liked animals. James loved his family and was a wonderful Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa, and he especially loved Avis’ cooking. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Springlake. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, H.B. Smith, Wayne Smith and Edward Smith; and one sister, Jackie Gierisch.
James is survived by his wife, Avis; his two sons, Jimmy Smith and his wife, Alberta of Springlake, Texas and Lloyd Smith and his wife, Andrea of Petersburg, Texas; his two daughters, Ginger Carpenter and her husband, Lynn of Southlake, Texas and Donna Clayton and her husband, Tommy of Springlake, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
