Obituary for Jay Don Standefer

Jay Don Standefer, Age 60, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed away on January 31, 2024. He was born in Portales, New Mexico, and was the son of Mary Ellen Standefer and Jay Dick Standefer.

After graduation from Portales High School Jay began his journey in the Golf Industry. Jay spent one year attending Dallas Baptist on a golf scholarship. Jay learned his strengths were in agronomy and he moved to NMSU where he completed his college degree in Parks and Recreation management. Jay spent his career making a difference on every new and existing golf course he worked on. Jay managed the turf grow-in on new golf courses in Mexico, Utah, Las Vegas, and China’s Mission Hills known as the world’s largest golf course. He also managed NMMI, Rio Rancho Las Cruces, Portales, and Midland’s Nueva Vista golf courses. Jay retired in July of 2023 and moved to Oklahoma City with his love and best friend, Brenda Mashore. Jay and Brenda had a shared passion for travel and photography.

Jay was preceded in death by his mother Mary Ellen Standefer, his father, Jay Dick Standefer, his sister, Brenda Brady, and his sister-in-law Ann Standefer. He is survived by his brother Steve Standefer of Pinehurst, Texas, Bruce Standefer (married to Kathy Jo Standefer) of Waller, Texas, and his girlfriend Brenda Mashore of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was also the self-described, “Favorite Uncle” to Kristy Harris, Tasha Johnson, Holly Cole, Lauren Mulkey, Trace Standefer, Derek Standefer, and Jared Standefer.
