Obituary for Mildred Estelle Scott (Doolittle)
Mildred Estelle “Sue” Doolittle Scott, 80, joined her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, in Lubbock, Texas. A memorial service will be held at Mackenzie Place, 8609 Boston, in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at 2:30pm CST.
Sue was born on February 27, 1939, in Clovis, New Mexico, to Truman and Ruth Bell Doolittle. She was the youngest of 11 children. Sue had 9 older brothers and one sister who always wanted a “sister Sue”. When Mildred was born, her sister said she finally got her sister Sue. Mildred was then known as “Sue”. Sue was raised on a dairy farm located where the Clovis airport is now. She attended school in Texico, New Mexico, where she was voted Miss Texico High School and homecoming queen.
Sue loved horses. When she was 15 years old, she entered a rodeo and won 3rd place in barrels while riding bareback. On November 23, 1957, Sue (and her horse Blaze) married Orville “Keith” Scott in Texico, New Mexico, during a blizzard. That horse lived 32 years and Sue and Keith raised many foals. Keith would always tell people when he married Sue, he married a horse. Sue and Keith settled south of Texico, New Mexico. Sue was a housewife and farm worker. She helped work cattle and drove trucks in addition to feeding cattle and milking cows. When Keith had back surgery, Sue and Mike, her 12 year- old son, took care of a 40-baby calf operation and a pen of thirty 1000 pound bulls.
Sue received the gift of salvation in 1961 during a revival led by Orville Brantley. She taught youth in the Texico First Baptist Church. Her greatest joys were her four God-led children: Mike, Ruth Ann, Cheryl, and Aaron. Sue was a wonderful example of a Godly wife, mother, and friend in the middle of hardships or good times with everyone, not just family. She gave up buying herself things she needed so her children could have some things they wanted, and she never said a word about her sacrifices. She supported her children in all their activities and was their biggest cheerleader. She lovingly cared for her father, mother, and mother-in-law as their age progressed and their health deteriorated.
In 1995, Keith and Sue relocated from Broadview, New Mexico, to Missouri. They lived there until Keith retired from the postal service. In 1999, they moved to Plains, Texas, in order to be closer to their children and beloved grandchildren. Sue was very involved in her grandchildren’s lives and was always willing to play games with them.
Keith and Sue moved to the Mackenzie Place in Lubbock, Texas, in 2018. They were active in all the activities and led a weekly game of 42 for the residents. Even as her battle with Parkinson’s disease became more difficult, Sue always managed to smile and trust in the Lord for His peace in the midst of her circumstances. Parkinson’s may have taken most of her voice, her physical abilities, and ultimately her life, but we know that nothing separated her from her Lord, Jesus Christ.
Sue is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Keith Scott, of Lubbock, Texas; her four children: son Mike Scott and Pam of Farwell, TX; daughter Ruth Kostedt and Glenn of Denver City, TX; daughter Cheryl McKinzie and ex-husband Shane of Plains, TX; and son Aaron Scott and Brienna of Clovis, NM. Sue also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Robin Scott; Sara (Zac) Teston; Charity (Ryker) Taylor; Scott, Hope, and Christopher Kostedt; Jaden, Jera, and Jaebri Scott; and M’Leah (John) Tyson. She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren: Ethan, Corban, Jaxan, and Ronan Tyson; and Zephaniah Teston.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents Truman and Ruth Doolittle; 9 brothers: Marvin, Mansel, Jerial, Dorwin, Hershel, Kenneth, Leon, Gayle, and Ansel Doolittle; and her sister, Doris “Sis” Tucker; and one grandchild, Matt McKinzie.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Mackenzie Place for their care and friendship. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation to St. Jude Hospital.
