Obituary for Vera Wood (Scarborough)

Vera Arlene Scarborough Wood, age 72, of Clovis, New Mexico, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior, on September 1, 2022, in Clovis. She was born October 1, 1949 in Dimmitt, Texas to Normie and Mary (Lowe) Scarborough. She married Boyd Wood on December 30, 1979 in Clovis.

Born in Texas and raised in Clovis, New Mexico, Vera was involved in various school activities and won awards in Home Economics. Vera’s early career was as the Office Manager for McGehee Construction in Clovis and she later enjoyed a 32-year career at Cannon Air Force Base, retiring in January of 2014, as a Hazardous Waste Monitor in the Civil Engineering Department. Vera never met a stranger and was always there to lend a helping hand when someone was in need. She enjoyed volunteering with her church and in the community, as a CASA for several years, delivering Meals on Wheels, teaching Sunday School, and assisting with after-school tutoring of children through the church. Vera fought a courageous battle with cancer and was surrounded by family during her final days. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Vera is survived by the love of her life, Boyd (“Woody”) Wood, and her children, Brandon (Leslie) Hughes, Salina, Kansas; Nikkie (Kenny) Rice, Lubbock, Texas; Crescent (Brian) Ostrom, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Michael (Jessa) Wood, Clovis, New Mexico. The light of her life are the grandchildren she leaves behind; Orrin (Moira) Rice, Lawton, Oklahoma; Mackenzie Rice, Ft. Hood, Texas; Ethan and Paden Hughes, Salina, Kansas; Hanna Ostrom, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Sydney Rice, Lubbock, Texas and her great-grandson, Ayden Rice, Lawton, Oklahoma.

In keeping with Vera’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, she would like memorial contributions to be made to the Pregnancy Resource Center, 621 N. Main St., Clovis, New Mexico 88101.
