Obituary for Wilcy Moore

Wilcy Moore, age 92, of Muleshoe, Texas, died Saturday, September 25, 2021, in Muleshoe. He was born July 6, 1929 at his parents’ home in Needmore, Texas to N.C. and Sammie (Cunningham) Moore. He married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Mary Arnold, at home plate at Bell Baseball Park in Clovis, New Mexico on June 23, 1948.

Wilcy attended Longview Elementary School and graduated from Muleshoe High School. He signed a professional baseball contract in 1948 to play in the West Texas/New Mexico League, Class B for 3 years. He was then sold to the Dallas Eagles of the Texas League in 1951. Wilcy played for 2 years in the Big State League, Class B for Dallas Farm Clubs in Gainesville and Longview, Texas. He was called up to Dallas in June of 1952, and played there until 1957. In 1958, Wilcy was sold to Portland, Oregon, known as the Chicago Cubs farm team. Later, in 1958, he was sold to Rochester, New York, in the AAA division of the Saint Louis Cardinals, and then transferred to the Houston AAA Club in 1959. Wilcy retired from pro baseball in 1959. He came home to Muleshoe and worked for the Union Compress from 1952 until 1962. He then went to work for the Muleshoe Co-op Gins and worked there until 1968. Wilcy took over the family farming operations in 1968 and retired from farming in 2000. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Muleshoe. Wilcy is preceded in death by his parents, N.C. and Sammie Moore and a brother, Don Moore.

Wilcy is survived by his wife, Mary; his two daughters, Dana Davis and her husband, Jay of Irving, Texas and Sherry Barrett and her husband, Ronnie of Muleshoe, Texas; his sister, Frances Simmons of Dripping Springs, Texas; his three grandchildren, Ronnie Gail Hamilton and her husband, Jamie of Midlothian, Texas, Brooke Barrett and her fiancé, Kelly Kiser of Levelland, Texas and Jason Barrett and his wife, Summer of Lubbock, Texas; and his five great-grandchildren, Taylor Hamilton Ludwig and her husband, Mark, Barrett Hamilton, Kelsei Barrett, Jordan Barrett and Hayden Barrett; and several nieces and nephews, including Donna Black, Tom Glass and Jerry Glass.
