Girldene Wiggins, age 90, passed away in Hereford, Texas on Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Girldene was born July 4, 1924, in Carbon Hill, Alabama. Her parents Robert and Donna Wright named her Mary Girldene, though she preferred to go by “Girldene.” The family moved to Ponder, Texas, and ultimately settled on a farm in Childress County, Texas, in 1933.

Girldene married C. W. Wiggins on December 23, 1945. Though her parents were Methodist, Girldene became a lifelong Baptist following her marriage. The couple lived and farmed in Loraine, Texas, before moving to Morton, Texas, in 1954. Girldene would reside in Morton over fifty years.

After C. W. retired from farming in the early 1980s, Girldene managed the Green Stamp redemption center in Morton, served as an election judge, volunteered at the Cochran County Museum, and was custodian for the First Missionary Baptist Church for several years before retiring at the age of eighty-six.

She spent the final four years of her life at the King’s Manor Retirement Community in Hereford. Girldene was preceded in death by her husband in 2002 and a grandson Stephen Wiggins. She is survived by her son Robert, daughter-in-law Deborah, grandson Dale, a brother Aubort Wright, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted 1:00 PM, Monday, February 9, 2015 by Pastor Billy Wall at Morton Memorial Cemetery.
