Obituary for Lauranette Mason (Hawkins)
Lauranette Mason was born to George and Eula Pearl Hawkins on March 12, 1922 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. She died in her residence in Lubbock, Texas on November 15, 2017. Mrs. Mason was married to Raleigh Mason and they made their home in Muleshoe after moving from Fluvanna in 1953 and remained there until Mr. Mason’s death on July 31, 2005. Mrs. Mason owned the Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio located on Ave. B from 1956 through 1974, and continued to be active in the Studio through three subsequent owners. She was known for her personal service to others and she delighted in helping women feel beautiful.
Mrs. Mason graduated from Divide High School in Nolan, Texas where she met and fell in love with Raleigh Mason and they began the love story that became her life. The Divide High School 1940 Year Book quotes, “Lauranette Hawkins can play and sing. And someday soon, she’ll have a Mason ring.” Raleigh served in the 340th Bomb Squadron during World War II and was reported missing in action after his aircraft was shot down in a mission over Roverto, Italy. Lauranette received this news while she was in business school in San Angelo. Without hesitation, she bought her wedding dress and moved, assured that she would soon be Mrs. Raleigh Mason. They were married June 24, 1945.
Lauranette is survived by two daughters, Beckye and her husband Norris Conklin of Muleshoe and Sheryl of Dallas; her Grandchildren, Kelly Kay and her husband, Mark Heidel of Iowa City, Iowa, and Mason Conklin and his wife and Jessica of Holly Springs, Georgia; Jason Sullivan of Phoenix, Arizona, Yacob Sullivan Haileselassie currently serving in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her legacy of living the beauty that is creation is carried on through her great-grandchildren, Erin Emily and Jessica Raleigh Sullivan; Giana Haileselassie and Cora Mae and Leah Grace Conklin.
Mrs. Mason was a long time member of First Baptist Church, Muleshoe where she attended the Dorcas Class. We all miss her ‘funeral carrots and onions’.
