A Job

Uncle Preston, I always remember being a kind and gentle man. He was a man of God, and the memories are of his smile, a little laugh, a word read from the bible or a good prayer before a Thanksgiving meal. He believed in work or expected it from you. One summer mother and dad drop us off at Uncle Preston and Aunt Doris's home there in Farwell. We were excited because we were going to be with the older cousins and like a vacation, take a break. Preston saw it as more help, he was going to put me to work to see what I could do. Well in front of the fertilizer business there was this large patch of sunflowers (to me at 10-12 yrs of age). These sunflowers were way over my head. He gave me a hoe, and said "get after it!" Well it was a job, for the hoe would bounce off each sunflower unless I had that swing just right, to knock it down. A little water and maybe a coke with lunch helped us make it through the day, and by the end of the week we had those old sunflowers chopped to the ground. I was glad because it was a job complete, and as I see Uncle Preston's life has come to an end, I know it was complete. A man that gave his life dedicated to Christ. Brian Cobb
